This is a fascinating piece. N. C. Wyeth (1882 – 1945) sketched this, and the original sold for auction decades ago for an unknown amount. This was made for Trolley Barn Antiques from the exclusive Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, which selects only 65 students a year and has an impressive alum list. The packet of Indian photos was sent to Skowhegan's Executive Office in NYC, which is separate from their school and not an educational locale. Intriguingly, Skowhegan isn't a commercial art studio that takes commissions - it's primarily an academic institution. Any commissioned works are usually special projects involving their alum network rather than a regular service they offer. Interestingly and inexplicably, it was made as "Artist Unknown" as they knew who it was, as in the photo packet, they labeled it Wyeth (See Picture). Wyeth was very prolific and made over 3000 known pieces. The original sketch sold at the auction included a letter from Betsy Wyeth and was marked as a "Sat Sketch" in pencil on the back by N. C. Wyeth.

I had a gentleman call who said he owned the original. He had it on display in an Art Gallery in New York in the 1990s, and the guy who owned it disappeared with everything. He didn't even know it was sold at auction in 2006. I haven't researched or verified this particular story, but it adds another interesting layer to this piece's fascinating and complex history.

This is an incredible one-of-a-kind piece and will surely catch anyone's attention.
